John -
I just received a forwarded copy of your work bike message from Robert
Rayburn, East Bay (Oakland, CA) Bicycle Coalition. I imported 6 trikes
from China ( PRC ) this year - 4 flat beds and 2 smaller one w/ the box in
rear.

I was in PRC in June and rode several other models. They are generally
very heavy (and very heavy duty) with no gear-changing mechanism. My
flat beds have combination leaf and coil springs and are load rated @ 400
kilos. Considering that I have often hauled loads of 1 ton or more in my
1/2-ton Dodge pickup, these trikes are capable of hauling loads to the
limit of human propulsion abilities. ( I have seen these trikes loaded
w/ rebar, brick, etc. to the point where their springs were about
flattened out and three or four guys had to push them.

I love these big trikes and I want to promote the use of human powered
vehicles wherever feasible. Many core urban areas are relatively flat.
With multiple gear ratios and lighter construction, the potential to
ascend steeper and longer grades is increased. The economics of a person
of limited income being able to haul freight or simply access various
areas is also inviting.

The Chinese trikes are all steel tubing and angle iron. This is because
light weight alloys are probably too expensive, and welding/repair
technology for no-ferrous metals is not commonly available. They are
quite ubiquitous in design, and are easily repaired by someone w/ limited
bicycle mechanical knowledge/ talent. (Like me, for instance.)
Please contact me at your convenience.

Thank you and keep up the good work.
