Several multilateral treaties have been adopted by the United Nations
General Assembly to enable the orderly conduct of activities in outer space.

The cornerstone of these governance instruments is
1) The Outer Space Treaty of 1967. Among the principles embodied in the Treaty
are the freedom of exploration and use of space for the benefit and interest
of all countries, the non-appropriation of outer space, including the Moon and
other celestial bodies, and the prohibition of the deployment of
nuclear weapons or other kinds of weapons of mass destruction in outer space.

Four other treaties were adopted to reinforce the framework set by the Outer Space Treaty.

2) The Rescue Agreement of 1968 requires States to assist an astronaut in case of accident, distress, emergency or unintended landing.

3) The Liability Convention of 1972 establishes the standards of liability for damage caused by space objects.

4) The Registration Convention of 1975 requires States to register all objects launched into outer space with the United Nations.

5) The Moon Agreement of 1979 elaborates on the provisions of the Outer Space Treaty as they apply to the Moon and other celestial bodies.

6) The International Space Station cost US/ NASA $3 billion
per year x 30 years = $90 billion.
The war-mongers of the US Space Force want many more
bucks than these....
US Space Force (FY) 2025 budget request = $29.6 billion--
equal to 10 years ISS budget.
The current NASA budget (2023) was $25.4 billion.
The military budget (2023) was $820.3 billion.
The federal government (2023) collected $4.5 trillion / spent $6.2 trillion.

"...Vice President Kamala Harris announced on 19 April Washington’s commitment
to a ban on anti-satellite missile testing (ASAT) while visiting Vandenberg
Space Force Base and called upon others to jump on the US bandwagon. What’s
behind the Biden administration’s space initiative ?

“I would say that the US is insincere when it suggests a ban on ASAT testing,”
says Bruce Gagnon, director of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear
Power in Space. “If Washington was serious about banning offensive military
operations in space then why has the US government for at least the last 25
years refused to negotiate at the UN a binding treaty to ban all weapons in
space? Each year Russia and China have introduced such a global ban treaty on
any and all kinds of weapons in space. The official statement by the US has
long been – ‘There is no need for a new treaty to ban all weapons in space
because there are none in orbit now. There is no problem.'”...".

(By Jeremy Kuzmarov, Published by Covert Action Magazine, 10 apr 2022)
New cold war provides continued backdrop for misallocation of public resources
into weaponry right out of science fiction films
As homeless rates skyrocket and public education flounders, the Biden admin-
istration has proposed a record $27.6 billion budget for the militarization
of outer space in 2023—a 25% increase from the 2022 budget.

Adopted in violation of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty that sets aside space
“for peaceful purposes,” Biden’s space program is designed to maintain
strategic advantages over Russia and China, which are developing what U.S.
intelligence agencies consider “destructive anti-satellite weapons,” including
ballistic missiles, that could be “used against the U.S.”

Both Chinese and Russian government leaders have publicly stated their desire
for a binding treaty to ban the deployment of “any types of weapons” in space,
which the U.S. has rejected.

"....The “No Militarization of Space Act” has been introduced in the U.S. Congress.
It would abolish the new U.S. Space Force. It is being sponsored by five members of
the House of Representatives led by Representative Jared Huffman. In a statement
announcing the September 22nd introduction of the measure, Huffman called the U.S.
Space Force “costly and unnecessary.” ... Co-sponsors of the “No Militarization of
Space Act” are Representatives Mark Pocan of Wisconsin, chair of the Congressional
Progressive Caucus; Maxine Waters of California; Rashida Tlaib of Michigan; and
Jesus Garcia of Illinois. All are Democrats.... But not only has Joe Biden stuck
with the U.S. Space Force, but most Democrats in both the House of Representatives
and Senate voted for its creation as championed by Trump. All Republicans in
Congress voted for it....".
